1832. 🇬🇧 Royal Mail’s Shameful Decision - No Stamp For Captain Tom.

🇬🇧 An update on an internet site where Stamp Collecting Magazine had introduced a petition calling on Royal Mail to issue a stamp to commemorate the late Captain Sir Thomas Moore now reveals that the British postal service has no intention of issuing a stamp to commemorate his life and achievement. The centenarian by his own efforts raised £33 million for Health Service charities and in doing so raised the nation’s morale during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a short time he became a national icon and a national treasure but Royal Mail has pronounced that its ‘Special stamps programme’ has been ‘finalised for this year’ and it seems it has no flexibility to release an additional stamp to commemorate the hero of so many in Britain and abroad. It did of course last year release numerous stamps to commemorate an American television science fiction programme and will shortly issue a large set of stamps to commemorate a fictional family of Cockney conmen.

It is sad that Royal Mail is incapable of more flexibility in its stamp new issue programme but this has long been the case. The subjects it features on its philatelic products frequently confirm that those who control Royal Mail new issues “know the price of everything and the value of nothing”. Perhaps Royal Mail should plan another British television series commemorative set, this time for the old Channel 4 series, Shameless.

ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸ IGPC has released a miniature sheet containing 4 different stamps with a stated date of issue of 14 January 2021 with the name of Guyana printed on the stamps to commemorate the Lunar new year, Year of the Ox. This may be regarded as the first issue of 2021 for Guyana and for that reason I illustrate it below. Rating:- 0.

  1. Funny how Royal Mail found room in their program for stamps commemorating Diana and when the Queen passed they will issue stamps for that, just as they did for the Queen Mother's passing.

    1. I think that the Celebrating The United Kingdom miniature sheet of 26 January 2021 includes British science’s contribution to the fight against the virus.

  3. The Programme was finalised in the respective years, but they managed to find a way to issue miniature sheets for Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, England winning the Ashes, England winning the Rugby World Cup, England ICC Women's World Cup Cricket Winners England Cricket World Cup Winners. Are they any more worthy of commemoration?

    1. You make an excellent point. The Royal Mail stamp programme composers are hopelessly out of touch with public sentiment.
