On the day prior to the announcement about the new definitives Royal Mail Stamps trailered the revelation with social media posts -
I guess these were to be expected, but honestly I find the design underwhelming. I suppose the Machin design converyed a sense of majesty, as the Queen was wearing her crown. I was hoping Royal Mail would go for a change in definitives and possibly incorporate the four countries as well. Imagine a series that shows famous landmarks or cultural aspect of the British Isles.
ReplyDeleteWK replying - I like them though maybe there is a sense that there could be something more there. Of course the whole point of the design is simplicity - less is more - and a necessary downplaying of the majesty element because of society’s present attitudes. They convey that while Diana wanted to be the “People’s Princess” it is Charles who is the “People’s King” and that all goes along with the simplification of the Coronation ceremony.
ReplyDeleteNothing that compares to the beautiful profile of the young Queen Elizabeth, but Charles has the disadvantage of having always been ugly and having taken the throne at an old age. Anyway, the artist managed to give an air of dignity and serenity that are the main attributes of a king.
ReplyDeleteI hope the King William V definitives will look better than this. If stamps still exist by then...
