๐ถ๐ฆ Death of the former Emir of Qatar.
It was announced on 12 July 2026 that the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, who had been featured on a number of postage stamps and who had been in longstanding ill health had died. He had ruled Qatar from 27 June 1995 to 25 June 2013 when he abdicated in favour of his son Tamim bin Khalifa al Thani who is the present Emir of Qatar. He had seized power in a coup in 1995 overthrowing his father Khalifa bin Hamad al Thani and during his reign Qatar became the country with the highest per capita income in the world. Qatar was a British Protectorate from 1916 to 1971.
