Habemus Papam! Prepare for issues portraying Pope Leo XIV.

Today, 8 May, after four votes by the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City, white smoke poured out of the chimney especially erected there indicating that a new Head of the Church and Bishop of Rome had elected by those cardinals. The newly chosen Pope, Robert Prevost, the first American Pope, was announced as having taken the name Pope Leo XIV.

As a result we may now expect a whole range of post offices or philatelic agencies to be issuing stamps depicting Pope Leo XIV as well as his predecessor, Pope Francis. It’s hard to believe that Stamperija and New York-based IGPC are not already preparing designs with various country names printed on them in an attempt to cash in on this new papacy. MaltaPost was the first Commonwealth postal service to issue stamps to mourn Pope Francis, will it be the first to commemorate Pope Leo?
