Sheikh Nawaf |
Death of the Emir of Kuwait.
The death of the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, aged 86, has been announced setting off a 40 day period of national mourning in the Gulf state. He ruled Kuwait from 20 September 2020 to 16 December 2023, having succeeded his brother, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah who had ruled from 29 January 2006. The Crown Prince, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber has succeeded Sheikh Nawaf as Emir of Kuwait. All three of these rulers were sons of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah Al-Jaber who ruled Kuwait from 29 March 1921 to 29 January 1951. Sheikh Nawaf, though his reign was short, was greatly loved by his Kuwaiti subjects although his reign was marked by a standoff between the Kuwaiti governments and Kuwait’s Parliament.
