Frog vs Bear

🇬🇧🐻🐸 Royal Mail

As usual, under its current self-regarding senior management, Royal Mail has completely missed the boat by announcing that a set of stamps later this year will feature Paddington Bear, famously featured in a short piece with her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, filmed to commemorate the much loved queen’s platinum jubilee. Paddington discovered what the world was wondering about for all those years - what did The Queen carry around in her handbag? In the unlikely event that you missed it - the answer was - marmalade sandwiches!

Unfortunately it’s now clear that Paddington is yesterday’s bear, with a new reign comes a new animal - and so we have an old star restored to us - Kermit The Frog, sometimes assisted by the notorious Miss Piggy, Kermit had the honour to be seated next to Prince Edward, the new Duke of Edinburgh, at the fabulous Coronation Concert held at Windsor Castle on 7 May with a front row view of the show. And there was no sign of Paddington.

Only those who plan the Royal Mail new issue programme could manage to feature an out-of-fashion bear one year later than when he was at his peak instead of being in touch with what the people - and The King - really want - green and beloved, Kermit The Frog who may have an American accent but who is a British as a French bulldog (the current canine fashion, no trendy film star luvvie should be without one).

We must expect that the 2024 Royal Mail new issue programme will therefore include Kermit and Piggy and the rest of the Muppets (no, I’m not referring to an issue featuring British politicians).
