New issue stamp programmes 2024.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Guernsey Post -

Further to the list of the first proposed issues of 2024 (see Blog 2277), Guernsey Post has now published a more complete list to the end of the year. One is tempted to comment that the excessive release of new issues will continue and that the individual issues will very much be ‘more of the same’ though equally there are commemorations of some worthwhile anniversaries of local relevance included in the list:-

The end of Pobjoy Stamps.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ญ The Pobjoy Mint and Coin-producing business, and along with it Pobjoy Stamps, will close at the end of the year and cease to publicise and distribute the stamps of Ascension, British Antarctic Territory, Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and Tristan Da Cunha. This information recently became available in numismatic magazines and is mentioned in a tweet (X) from Linn’s Stamp News and a short article in that publication. The closure of the business will coincide with the retirement of Taya Pobjoy, the managing director of Pobjoy. Linn’s reports that Angela Warner, Pobjoy Coins and Stamps administrator, has stated that, “It is my understanding that each individual territory is now making arrangements for future sales and they will be able to share that news once everything has been finalised”.

Hopefully this will not mean the end of the various territories’ wonderful recent record of producing high quality, well designed, reasonably priced, non-exploitative, locally relevant new issues that has been the case in the past one or two decades as the design and production of their stamps has been in the hands of the excellent Creative Direction which has used Pobjoy for marketing and distribution of the philatelic products.

Thanks to Ian Billings of Norvic Stamps for drawing my attention to this interesting and important development in the new issue field.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Royal Mail -

2023 - Horizon labels. The leading Blog on British stamps, Norvic Philatelic Blog, edited by Ian Billings, has recently drawn attention to a change in the design of the counter printed Horizon labels to substitute the cameo of King Charles III to replace the silhouette of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. These are fascinating items as they may be seen as postage stamps, if one so wishes, as they are receipts indicating the prepayment of postage which are adhesive and fulfill the role by being stuck to items of mail prior to them being sent through the post. I suspect that far more of them are used on mail in Britain now than any conventional postage stamps and in particular, the vast array of ‘commemorative’ stamps. For anyone interested in the evolution of the carriage of mail, they are vital parts of the story and a section should be set aside for them, I believe, in a modern British stamp collection.

1464. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ณ Brunei Darussalam Depicts National Costume On New ASEAN Stamp.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ณ The postal service of Brunei Darussalam has kindly supplied me with a picture of a sheet of the upcoming ‘ASEAN Post’ National Costume stamp mentioned in Blog 1463 and due for issue on 8 August 2019. An attractive and remarkably inexpensive issue. Rating:- *****.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Pos Malaysia will issue packs of personalised stamps, similar to Australia Post’s Collectors packs, from 23 July 2019 on the subject of the 80th anniversary of Marvel Comics which reflect a lot of American culture and nothing to do with Malaysian culture. The packs will contain 3 sheets, 2 of which contain 5 different stamps each of which depict a Marvel Comics character, and the third contains a single stamp. An item strictly for comic enthusiasts. Rating:- 0.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง As any serious collector of modern British Stamps will know there is one indispensable internet site for expert, detailed, up-to-date information about the philatelic output of Royal Mail and that is Ian Billings’ Norvic Philatelic Blog. His coverage of new Machin Head definitives and their varieties is second to none and to know just what has and hasn’t happened on the Royal Mail new issue front a very regular visit to the Norvic site is of the greatest importance.
I thought I ought to catch up on the 2019 definitive varieties so that I could track them down for my collection now that Norvic is no longer selling those new issues from 2019 onwards but of course I needed to refer to Norvic’s information on the new varieties to know what I should be looking for. As far as I can see the 2019 varieties which have appeared so far are:-
