Are these Samoan stamps officially released by them? Or are they just a release from China themselves, which they have done for other countries over the years. Shows $1.00 & 1.00 values, so it shows an error there. So again a official release or not.
ReplyDeleteWK replying - You are quite right. It’s likely that these were produced by the Chinese authorities & given to the Samoan postal service to publicise the good relations between the two countries. As you say China has done the same with very many countries. The People’s Republic is in a league of its own when it comes to philatelic diplomacy. I have written about it before, more than once I think. I expect, but don’t know, that the items will be released in Samoa but what the quantities will be & how easy it will be to get a set is another question altogether.
DeleteThe Samoa issue seems like it is produced by China and mainly philatelic as Samoa hasn't issued new stamps since around 2016 and only overprints the old ones with very high face values.
ReplyDeleteWK replying - I would say that nearly every modern stamp issue is “mainly philatelic”. This issue is more than that however as it represents another example of philatelic diplomacy propaganda at which the Chinese government is very adept. The issue is intended to underline the People’s Republic’s links with various countries especially in the Asia-Pacific which may have a strategic and economic significance to it. So, from the postal point of view it is unnecessary but there are other reasons for releasing it. Clearly the government of Samoa sees benefits for Samoa arising from its links with China and advertising it on their stamps.
DeleteChina has released its version of this issue as well, so it turns out that this is a joint issue.
