I quite like the Heard Island set and have been trying to think up an excuse to buy it (Australia Post issue so many stamps that I made it my rule only to buy those which commemorate a significant event or anniversary of direct relevance to Australia) so by pointing out that this issue does commemorate an anniversary (though it being 70 years the question of whether or not it is significant arises) you have given me a reason to obtain the issue.
You are quite right of course, it would be expecting too much for a philatelic service to wait another 30 years for a new stamp issue when it could issue one now, and then again in 5 years time (75th anniversary), 10 years (80th anniversary), 20 years time (90th anniversary) and 30 years (Centenary). It also begs the question of whether or not anyone will be issuing postage stamps at all in 30 years time.
Best wishes, WK.White Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17968199477827266643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005756131065514338.post-38648191039743824922017-08-14T01:45:54.059+00:002017-08-14T01:45:54.059+00:00The Heard Island issue is an Australian issue, and...The Heard Island issue is an Australian issue, and definitely not the first from a new philatelic entity. The complication is that the islands are an external territory of Australia, but are more Antarctic in nature. Hence when Macquarie Island was celebrated, it was an issue from the Australian Antarctic Territory, but Heard Island is part of Australia.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the islands becoming an external territory, so this may explain the issue - Australia Post normally only issues stamps for Australian anniversaries which are multiples of 50, and multiples of 25 for the territories. However, there have been exceptions – a few years ago there was an issue marking the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty. Dare I say that maybe Australia Post is realising that waiting another 30 years to mark the centenary of Heard Island is a little too long to wait?Chris de Haerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01103852699388056651noreply@blogger.com
