Reading about all this I see that Mauritius claims date back to the Treaty of Paris of 1814 when Seychelles and Rodrigues were named as Dependencies of Mauritius but Chagos, Agalega and Tromelin were not. However though not named as Dependencies in the Treaty Chagos and Agalega were transferred to British sovereignty by France, along with Mauritius, Rodrigues and Seychelles, and ruled by the British from Mauritius as though they were Dependencies of Mauritius although the sovereignty was British not Mauritian. Likewise Tromelin was not named as a Dependency of Mauritius and France claims that as it was not mentioned specifically in the Treaty so it is not to be returned to Mauritius. Rodrigues remains a Dependency of Mauritius as does Agalega and presumably, following Mauritius’ argument about the other Dependencies it could claim sovereignty over the now independent Seychelles. Despite the findings of the International Court it seems arguable that Chagos having always been under British sovereignty since 1814 though from Mauritius is actually British and not Mauritian and Mauritius’s claim on Tromelin is even weaker.
It seems to me that the whole affair approaches the complexity of the Schleswig-Holstein Question.White Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17968199477827266643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005756131065514338.post-35107601838244607772019-08-24T06:07:44.395+00:002019-08-24T06:07:44.395+00:00Hello. I wonder if Mauritius will try another stamp issue about the French Scattered Island of Tromelin.

The successive French Presidents and Governments are trying to find a way to associate neighbouring countries to the protection and exploitation of this groups of small islands France owns around Madagascar.

The problem is that everytime such project reach early steps at Parliament, all hell break loose from patriotic MPs... How long before Mauritius and other Indian Ocean countries lose patience?Sébastienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01674101477168730912noreply@blogger.com
