These are primarily used at post offices for customers wanting to purchase just one stamp for one letter. <br />The current postage rate in Canada for a domestic letter is 85 cents - the P rate. But you cannot purchase individual P stamps, they must be purchased in complete booklets (usually of 6, 10, or 12) or in coils of 50. If you want just one stamp, the rate is $1 - covered by the $1 stamp. <br /><br />I should also note that sales taxes are added to the cost of stamps in Canada - so that $1 stamp can cost anything between $1.05 and $1.15 depending which province you purchase it in!<br /><br />Also on the place names - the names are actually on the stamps in micro-print - but you have to know to look!
